According to Wikipedia, a translator is a specialist engaged in translation, creating written or oral texts in a specific language, equivalent to texts in another language. This could be the end of the story, but today we would like to take a more romantic and biased look at this profession.

Prologue

Legend has it, post-flood, humans sought better lands and started to build dwellings but got so carried away that they built a huge tower. God became alarmed and decided to put an end to such a man-made thing: He came down and mixed the languages of men so that they could no longer understand each other. That’s how the profession of “translator” came into being.

True story 🙂

Our Days

Today, it is difficult to gauge the global impact translators make in shaping our digital world. Bridges don’t unite people; words do. Can you imagine how many things a translator has to understand, how much to know, and, more importantly, their knack to find what they don’t know?! So it is thanks to the knowledge and skills of these heroes, we can:

  • Order products with the correct description online, such as “Portable High Frequency Facial Ozone Treatment Wand Kit”, rather than guessing from a machine translation whether the words “portable high-frequency wand kit for ozone facial massage treatment” will do more harm than good to your face.
  • Operate the most complex medical equipment without even having a back thought that the word “angina” in other languages means not only severe pain in the chest, but also a sore throat.

  • Install software in our native language where the bold font has nothing to do with confidence or determination, and the end user license agreement is for end users, not for end license or end agreement.

  • Feel comfy in a smart home and choose the toggle switches you want, not the “rockers” with a queer hairdo.

  • Follow the trends and know what a smart lighting tower looks like and why you might need it.

  • Wear eco-friendly shoes made from recycled materials, not from trash.

  • Be sure that a foot muff for a stroller is for your baby’s comfort and not for shifting gears.

  • To make accurate sports bets.

  • Enjoy presentations of your favorite brands that appeal to all genders, not only men.

  • Safely order food in restaurants abroad, not being afraid of whether it’s really something edible.

Epilogue

So who are the translators? Translators are genuine reality crafters, turning foreign into familiar, complex into comfy, and unread into readable. They break barriers, unveil myths, aid in healing, learning, and raising awareness on things that matter. With every keystroke, these light warriors dispel ignorance, enlightening our realm.
